And… we’re back!
It’s Autumn and we’re relaunching with some big news to share with you over the next few months. But before we get to that, it’s been a minute, and I for one need a quick refresher on the story so far…
Foremost we want you to know that the Climate Venture Collective is, as it always has been, a place for action and collaboration. It started off as a thought, a feeling, a hope born out of frustration. “We’ve been talking for so many years”, Josh thought, “where can I go to start doing something?”
And now it’s a community born from an ethos that carries through everything we do to this day:
It’s more important to get started than to be right.
That ethos resonated with a lot of you. And that shared attitude has brought us all together in one big collective. We’re all here to help each other turn wonderful ideas into concrete action. We know it’s daunting starting out, and that’s why we’re all here to support one another.
The new ideas you come up with make us all learn and iterate in different ways. We don’t stop, we learn, change and go again!
Our experiments don’t always come off: some do work and some don’t, but the failures help us learn and iterate just as much as the successes.
And none of this would work without collaboration. We need you! Without new people with new ideas there would be nobody to learn from and to inspire new iterations and experiments.
Experiments that those in power have shied away from for long enough, but here in the CVC we know that we can get started with or without their help.
I was scared too, it’s scary out there. All alone…
It’s not a horror story, it’s traditional entrepreneurialism. Hard, scary, lonely and burnt out. But the CVC relaunch is here to remake the journey of entrepreneurship. It doesn’t have to be like that. Think about what entrepreneurship could be like tomorrow. We want to see collaboration and regeneration. Why shouldn’t climate entrepreneurialism be as regenerative as the global climate we want to reach? We want to empower people on their journey through collaborative support and a set of tools. Tools which we’ve designed to help you be on that journey. We’re not telling people what to do, we just think these tools are helpful.
If you’re planting a forest and we hand you a shovel, that’s the right tool for the mission. So we all need to know what your mission is. Maybe you already know this. Maybe you don’t. Maybe you’re the one with the shovel, but not the mission to plant the forest. No matter where you are on your journey, there’s a crucial place for you in the CVC. Together, we make a vital ecosystem.
You could be a Seed. You’re learning about the climate crisis, circular economy, and sustainability.
Maybe you’re a Seedling. You’re ideating on the problems we have and the solutions we might create. You could just need the confidence to do something about them.
Or you’re already a Sapling. You’re researching, testing, and building an idea with support.
Some of you have grown into a Grand Oak. We’re giving you support to get funding, make pitches, develop strategies, forecasts and a legal framework.
Or you’re a Root. You’re here to meet, network and offer your skills.
As we relaunch we continue to foster these stages and give each step the nourishment it needs to grow. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got all the time to spare or just the occasional hour. What matters is your mission: is it a seed that will one day burst from the soil, has it sprouted already, has it taken form, or is it a root that secures the growth of others?
Let’s take a trip…
There you are, sitting on a bus home from work, and there’s a traffic jam on the road you’re turning on to.
There you are, climbing the hill to your house, and the rain is lashing down.
Your driver shoves in ahead of other cars and you’re stuck in traffic, if only you could weave in and out like the bikes, or nip down a side road.
You’re slipping with every step, if only you could get more grip, or find another way.
But you can’t change your route, there’s only one way and the bus has to follow it.
But you can, you can zigzag, you can carve a new path by moving differently.
The traditional model of capitalism tells us that there’s a model for entrepreneurship. “It’s my way or the highway!” Want help? That’s a no. Want a break? Nope. How about helping other people? No way.
But entrepreneurship is easily the most special thing about capitalism, that’s why we’re relaunching with a whole new ambition: walk the hill differently. “We can’t get to the place we want to be by doing what we’ve done so far.”
For too long entrepreneurship has been locked in, like a bus stuck to its route. The CVC is here to release entrepreneurialism into the wilds. Let’s walk this hill together, finding footholds, resting places, and brand new routes. Let’s redefine it with radical collaboration.
Let’s turn it into something new – social entrepreneurship – a new entrepreneurship that refuses to sacrifice the many in the name of aggressive growth. An ecosystem of interconnected companies who put wellbeing, social value and environmental return first.
We once hoped, bustling about the web, that this would all lead to a brand new world of social and environmental good. We thought, “It’s all in the cyberspace, so it can’t harm the planet”, “True, it might not be perfect, but it’s all contained in the computers, so it won’t affect the real world”, “Somewhere in this free online society the best way will prevail”. How wrong we were. Tech alone can’t solve this problem. It’s a tool like any other, but in the hands of everyone, collaboratively, what a lifechanging tool it could be.
We can’t go on like this if we’re going to halt the damage being done to the world. So, the real question is:
The new way is coming – do you want to be on board?
If you’re planting a forest and we hand you a shovel, that’s the right tool for the mission. And to give you the right tools we all need to know what your mission is. Maybe you already know this. Maybe you don’t. Maybe you’re the one with the shovel, but not the mission to plant the forest. No matter where you are on your journey, there’s a crucial place for you in the CVC. Together, we make a vital ecosystem.
